Pasado un tiempo prudencial como para evaluar diferentes situaciones, entrevistamos a Mario Moccia -Presidente de la Confederación Argentina de Handball y de la Federación Panamericana de Handball- para conocer sus sensaciones tras la disputa de los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto 2015.
En un año trascendental para el handball de nuestro continente, con dos países clasificados a los Juegos Olímpicos por rama y con uno de ellos, Brasil, Campeón del Mundo, mucho pasa por la cabeza de quien conduce este deporte en nuestro país y en toda América.
¿Qué balance hace de la organización de Toronto 2015?
La organización de los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto 2015 fue de muy buen nivel. Realmente a mi me sorprendió la excelencia de la organización en muchos aspectos que, en principio, me preocupaban, pero creo que los miembros del Comité Organizador pudieron encontrar una excelente oferta para el desarrollo de la actividad. Fueron muy buenas las instalaciones, todas en perfectas condiciones. El nivel de la Villa Panamericana fue excelente y la alimentación dentro de la misma fue inmejorable. Además, Toronto es una hermosa ciudad que funcionó a la perfección en cada uno de los aspectos que tienen directa relación con los Juegos. Por todo esto, mi evaluación fue muy satisfactoria, más allá de algún pequeño problema en alguna área, como el uso compartido de voluntarios en algunas misiones.
¿Cómo vio la competencia de handball específicamente?
Con respecto al handball, estuvimos ubicados en un excelente lugar, lo que fue un mérito conjunto con la Federación Internacional (IHF). Creo que la participación de León Kalin fue clave en este aspecto. Como representante de la IHF, participó en todas las reuniones de coordinación con el Comité Organizador y la Federación Panamericana (PATHF) y se opuso inicialmente a un estadio que se ofrecía, que era muy interesante, pero no estaba acorde a la realidad del handball en Toronto, donde no se practica este deporte o bien está muy poco desarrollado. El objetivo entonces fue estar en una sede que se compartiera con otras disciplinas, lo que hizo que se aprovechara un gran movimiento de público para promocionar nuestro deporte. De esta manera, las instancias decisivas se disputaron con un estadio prácticamente colmado.
¿Cuál fue el nivel que vio y cómo vivió las definiciones de los torneos?
El nivel me pareció bueno, acorde a lo que uno esperaba. La competencia se manejó con absoluta normalidad, más allá de alguna sorpresa en algún resultado. Era impensado que Uruguay le ganara a Cuba en mujeres y se dio esa situación, que favoreció a Argentina, pero no hubo muchas sopresas más. Otra vez hubo una excelente final en varones entre Argentina y Brasil se llevaron los brasileños con una brillante actuación de Maik en el arco, quien fue clave en un momento determinante del partido e inclinó un partido que se jugó de igual a igual y que podría haber sido para cualquiera. Estoy realmente satisfecho.
¿Qué balance hace del nivel deportivo que hay en el continente?
Creo que el handball va creciendo en el continente, se van achicando las diferencias y se va mejorando el nivel del espectáculo deportivo. Creo que varios resultados que se dieron son testimonio de eso. Hay más competencia, hay más trabajo y hay mayor perspectiva de desarrollo de nuestro deporte, que en esta región del mundo aspira a crecer y a competir con el balonmano del mundo, lo que es difícil porque en otras latitudes hay otro nivel de competencia, es profesional, tiene otra exigencia, otro cronograma. Pero nosotros de a poco vamos creciendo, con Argentina y Brasil haciendo punta y con Chile y Uruguay alternando lugares protagónicos con Cuba, Dominicana o incluso México y Puerto Rico. Tenemos previsto optimizar la competencia regional, fortalecer el NorCa con un evento en Estados Unidos clasificatorio al Panamericano masculino de Argentina de junio del año próximo. Estamos planeando hacer la Copa Caribe para trabajar con esos países y sumarle tres territorios franceses adherentes como son Guyana, Guadalupe y Martinica. También queremos fortalecer la competencia en Centroamérica y hacer una propuesta importante a nivel clubes para dejar el formato actual del Panamericano y jugar un formato que abarque más cantidad de meses, más atractivo y que permita otro desarrollo. Creo que tenemos que innovar, tenemos que seguir trabajando y creo que el nivel del handball en América se va consolidando y se va proyectando año tras año.
Un año queda por delante para Río de Janeiro 2016, pero muchas cosas quedan por hacer en ese período que trascurrirá antes de algo histórico para nuestra región, contar con dos equipos en cada rama disputando los Juegos Olímpicos.

The Panamerican Games in Toronto ended some time ago and it is good to make a review with Mario Moccia -President of the Panamerican Team Handball Federation- to know his feelings after the realization of this big event.
With a year to go to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, handball in our continent is facing a great era with two teams qualified in both men and women. And also, having Brazil as World Champions. This is everyday on the head of who leads handball in the Americas.
What is the review you make of the organization of Toronto 2015?
The organization of 2015 Panamerican Games in Toronto was top leve. I was surprised by the excelence of the organizing in many aspects that, before the event, worried me, but I believe that the members of the Organizing Committee found an excelent offer for the realization of the tournament. The venues were really good, all in perfect conditions. The level of the Panamerican Village was outstanding and the feeding of the athletes was superb. Also, Toronto is a very beautiful city that worked perfect in every aspect related to the Games. Resuming, my reviw is really positive, besides some minor trouble in some areas, as the shared use of volunteers in some missions.
What is your opinion about the handball tournament?
Handball was placed in a really good hall, what was a joint achievement with the International Federation (IHF). I believe the participation of Leon Kalin was fundamental to ahieve this. As IHF representative, the participated in every coordination meeting with the Organizing Committee and the Panamerican Team Handball Federation (PATHF) and he spoked negative to the first hall offered, which was really interesting, but it was not coherent with handball reality in Toronto, a city in which handball is almost not played. The main gold was to be on a facility that was shared with other discipline, what let us take advantage of a big amount of public to promote our sport. With this, the finals days of competition were played at a full stadium.
What is your opinion about playing level on the final days?
The overall level was good, according what I espected. The competition was carried with normality, besides some surprises in results. No one could have thought that Uruguay would beat Cuba in women and that happended, what put Argentina in semifinals. Again, the men’s competition had an Argentina-Brazil gold medal match and the Brazilians won it with an outstanding performance of Maik at goal. I am really satisfied.
What is your opinion about handball level in our continent?
I believe that handball is growing in our continent, that differences are getting narrow and that the show for the audience is getting better. There were some results that prove this. There’s more competition, more work, a bigger development in our continent, that is working to grow and to compete with top level handball. This is difficult to acomplish since we have another level of competition, in Europe they are professional, there’s another rithym of work. But we grow step by step, with Argentina and Brazil on the top, followed by Chile and Uruguay. There’s also Cuba, Dominican Republica, Mexico and Puerto Rico. We are going to improve the competition in the region, make NorCa stronger with an event in the United States qualifier for the Panamerican Championship in Argentina next June. We want to organize Caribbean Cup to work in that region adding three French territories as Guyana, Guadalupe and Martinica. We also want to make competition stronger in Central America and to have an important event at clubs level to be played in several months, more atractive and allowing other development. I believe we have to innonvate, we have to keep working and handball leven in America will continue to get stronger year by year.
There is only one year to Rio de Janeiro 2016, but many things have to be done in that period before something historical for our region happens, having two teams in men and women at the Olympic Games.
